Making change at the cash register

Sara Walde and Kelly James have finished their studies at the University of Calgary, but their commitment to their favourite cause has already left a mark on campus.

The pair has been instrumental in moving the university towards becoming a Fair Trade Campus, possibly only the second in Canada.

In 2010, Walde and James wrote a proposal outlining the necessary steps to achieve a Fair Trade Campus designation, ensuring that goods sold on campus come from farmers and artisans who work in safe environments and receive fair wages.

One of the big questions—and there are many —that occupy Killam Scholar and kinesiology researcher Walter Herzog is why a muscle generates more force after it is stretched than a muscle that has not changed length. At the heart of this question is the understanding of how our muscles work. If Herzog and his lab are correct, a new model may be needed.

Cardiac registry provides answers for doctors and patients

Heart conditions raise many questions. Doctors, for example, ponder which treatment will be most appropriate, while patients wonder how their lives will forever change. Thanks to a researcher from the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta at the University of Calgary, it’s now much easier for both groups to get the answers they need.
